The Civic Engagement Index

From Press Forward, The Listening Post Collective, & Information Futures Lab

It is time to take a fresh look at the role that news and information play in communities—and their impact on civic health. The Civic Information Index uses data to map drivers of engaged, informed, equitable, and healthy communities nationwide.

Use the index dashboard to explore where communities are excelling and where they face unique challenges. Input a county and quickly see data on a range of factors, including volunteer rates, housing insecurity, medical debt and the existence of local news outlets, among others.

PFCA Literature Review

From Luke Boutwell, James Research Analytics

“Access to local news is a critical infrastructure of democracy. It informs citizens, fosters civic participation, ensures governmental accountability, and builds community identity. However, in rural communities across the United States and globally, the collapse of local news ecosystems has raised alarms about the broader societal consequences of “news deserts.” This literature review examines the value and social impact of news access in rural areas, drawing on empirical studies, scholarly analyses, and policy-driven reports. It explores how news access affects civic engagement, community cohesion, economic stability, and democratic participation, while also considering innovative responses and future models for sustainable rural journalism.”
